Ditch the filter! Add zinc to your diet and beauty regimen for Insta-worthy skin.

You are what you consume. It’s no secret that what we put in our bodies can determine everything from our energy and fitness levels to our complexion to our overall well-being. Feeling good and looking great has a lot to do with our diet and what we apply (or don’t apply) to our skin.

The quest for Insta-worthy skin may appear daunting at first. A seemingly infinite amount of skin care products flood beauty aisles, websites, and your Instagram feed on the daily. Where do you start? How do you choose? What do you need to know?

When anything seems overly complicated, a good rule-of-thumb is to begin with the basics. Growing up, we learned about our ABCs and then later our A to zinc. Just as our ABCs are elementary when it comes to reading, writing, and communicating, vitamins and minerals are fundamental to a healthy diet and better-looking skin.

For today’s lesson, let’s talk about zinc.

· Why do our bodies need zinc?

· When should we take zinc supplements and what do we need to know about them?

· Why is zinc used as a skin care ingredient?

· How can you incorporate products and food with zinc into your daily routine?

Why do our bodies need zinc?

Zinc is one of our body’s best friends when it comes to aiding metabolism and supporting a healthy immune system. It also contributes to nurturing skin health and the creation of DNA. We only need trace amounts of zinc to support these vital processes but, because it has a short lifespan in the body, we should be careful abou

t keeping it at a healthy level to avoid zinc deficiency.

When you’re not getting enough food with zinc, you may experience side effects such as feeling tired all the time, getting sick more easily, developing acne and skin inflammation, and experiencing delayed wound-healing. It’s important to consult with

your doctor in diagnosing and addressing zinc deficiency.

When should we take zinc supplements and what do we need to know about them?

To maintain a

healthy level of zinc in your body, you may also want to consider taking zinc supplements. Zinc supplements are generally safe when taken as intended and can be purchased without a prescription. But be selective! Choose a quality supplement from a reputable brand to make sure the amount of zinc you’re adding to your bod is not too little and never too much but just right. Possible side effects of too much zinc include nausea, vomiting, cramps, and headaches. To be on the safe side, don’t take more than 40mg of extra zinc a day unless your doctor tells you to.

Even better, find a multivitamin with a healthy dose of zinc in it designed for your specific needs. For example, people suffering from acne and skin problems can benefit from a multivitamin like [redacted]. It’s made to deliver vitamins and nutrients su

ch as zinc in correct doses to soothe and nourish the skin from within.

Why is zin

c used as a skin care ingredient?

Zinc works to protect your skin. It kills bad bacteria and forms a barrier for your skin to defend itself against harmful microbes. It also has reflective properties to shield your skin from UV rays. Check the label on your favorite sunscreen and you’ll prob

ably find some zinc in there too.

Zinc can treat and visibly improve your skin. It can be used orally or topically which means

it can heal skin issues from the inside or from the outside. Like sunscreen, topical application of zinc protects the skin and can speed up the wound heal

ing process. When taken in oral form, products and food with zinc are beneficial for inflammatory acne and related scarring due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and skin healing powers.

Zinc nourishes your skin. It aids in collagen production which improves skin hydration and elasticity to leave your skin looking glowing and radiant.

How can you

incorporate products and food with zinc into your daily routine?

Meat, shellfish, legumes, seeds, nuts, dairy, eggs, whole grains, and dark chocolate all contain zinc. Who says diets can’t be fun? Focus on your faves and easily integrate them into a diet that’s both enjoyable and beneficial for your health and skin.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. A nutrient-rich diet combined with proper skin care (don’t forget your sunscreen!) and a daily multivitamin like [redacted] are the basic foundations for acne-free, selfie-ready skin minus the filter.
